The king

The king moves one square at a time, in any direction: straight or diagonal.

He is slow, but he is the most important piece: the whole game turns on his safety. A king is never actually captured — the game stops before that, and you will see how in a few steps.

A king also cannot walk up to the enemy king: the two kings never stand next to each other.
